When mature, sunflowers settle down and face east to greet the rising sun, so they warm up quickly in the morning. This means that sunset is behind their faces. Because the flowers are so bright, reflected light is sufficient to illuminate them in a bracketed exposure. To control contrast, I waited until the sun was half behind a bank of cloud.
