Dunstanburgh Castle

Situated on a lonely crag, the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland are amongst the most evocative anywhere in Britain. From the north side, a solitary gate tower dominates the view. However, this aspect works best as a landscape because huge beach cobbles make a dramatic foreground, left wet by a falling tide. In early summer, late evening sun illuminates the scene at its best. All that was planned but I needed luck too; the image is completed by perfectly placed cirrus clouds.
