Brimstone Butterfly in Flight

With their striking colour and unusual shape mimicking leaves, brimstones are amongst our most charismatic butterflies. They always rest with their wings folded so this view of their upperside is unusual. I used precapture mode to buffer 15 frames before pressing the shutter, enabling me to get a sharp image in flight at 1/3,200th second as the butterfly took off from a flower. Whilst the brimstone is sunlit, the background is in shade and registers black on the camera’s sensor.
