Large Tortoiseshell Butterfly
This charismatic butterfly sadly became extinct in Britain around 50 years ago. In the last few years this gorgeous species has successfully recolonised southern England from continental Europe, perhaps assisted by our milder winters. It is breeding and overwintering in several counties; these individuals emerged last summer and have taken to the wing again in the warm days of early March. I photographed this one at Orlestone Forest in Kent. It was announced today (9 March 2026) that the large tortoiseshell is now recognised once more as a resident British butterfly. I have now photographed all 60 of Britain's resident and regularly breeding butterfly species. So I have a complete set ... and yes large tortoiseshell is one of my favourites.
