BARBURY CASTLE IN MIST

Hill forts date from the Iron Age (800 BC to 43 AD). They indicate that control over land, through physical defences and status symbols, had replaced the earlier preoccupation with ritual landscapes of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Barbury Castle on the northern Marlborough Downs is an impressive bivallate hill fort, with a double bank and ditch. It is tricky to photograph effectively from the ground but an aerial view enables the whole structure to be fully appreciated. Frost and mist complete the scene.
